The Bootie: Footwear with Attitude
September 30, 2009 - Linleigh Richker
Christian Louboutin Hidden Platform Bootie $1375
For most of us women, we own pumps, wedges, loafers, sandals, active shoes, thongs, evening shoes and boots - lots of boots in every heel, height and attitude. But do we own the bootie?
The bootie, not the one sagging at the end of your spine, but the bootie seen in almost every shoe collection gaining momentum since last spring is an ankle-high boot usually with a platform base and a 3-5 inch heel. It comes in leathers and suedes with ruffle, zipper or button accents and sometimes with a peep toe for an added punch.
Is this new shoe category a flash on the feet? Maybe, but for the stylishly confident woman, it has such versatility that it deserves a fashion recognition nod. The heavy aggressive proportion is what is new, so when worn with leggings or rolled up jeans it's casual and cool and when worn with skirts and dresses it's biker tongue and chic.
Here are a few ways to wear this footwear with attitude.
Julianne Moore in Derek Lam with Tod's booties
Keri Russell
Sister style: Sienna and Savannah Miller showcase their Twenty8Twelve collection at London Fashion Week (seen with the bootie)
Bootie on model wearing Vince legging and boyfriend jacket
And, lastly, here are a few of my bootie favorites at various price points.
Guess "Dotted" Ruched High Heel Booties $129
Elizabeth and James Lola Ruffled Bootie with Open Toe $360

Christian Louboutin Circus Suede and Net Ankle Boot $1295
Prada Cut-Out Shoe Bootie $595
Stuart Weitzman "Cover-Up" Suede Bootie $355
Pedro Garcia Platform Lace Up Bootie $495

There's not a lot I wouldn't do for those leopard boots.....

Loved your article on the new Bootie trend! Do you know if the Bootie looks good on a shorter person like me? Maybe that could be something you put in your fashion articles -- what body shape/size/height a particular trend works with. I'm thinking the bootie might make me look even shorter -- especially when worn with a skirt. I'm about 5'1. Your thoughts?

Hi Maureen,
You have a very good question and I should have cover this detail in the article. It's not a yes or no answer. This boot is all about proportion and it's done in different platform heights. I would say as a rule of thumb that the shorter the person, the lower platform should be. A 5'1" woman wearing that first Christian Louboutin cheetah boot on the website would look like she's part of a circus act. You don't want to appear to be wobbling on stilts. Also if you notice where each boot on the ankle comes is different. If you have large calves you don't want a boot that crops right at the ankle because it'll draw attention to your calves, but rather one that scoops down on one side to show off more foot. Keep in mind proportion when selecting your pair of booties. Linleigh

I've struggled with the bootie myself.

I agree , this bootie has been everywhere this fall. But does that make it a trend? If so, won't it look like "last year's boot" next fall? I'm just trying to determine how much I spend. Thanks.

Hi Tess,
I'm not saying one should buy the Christian Louboutin boot pictured above. I chose that picture because it says "bootie" big and loud and very few people can actually pull that one off. But I am saying perhaps you might want one in a solid color that will work with several looks already in your wardrobe. You are not missing out by not buying this look. It is a trend that has had some staying power, but it's not a basic wardrobe essential. Look in People Stylewatch's October Issue. There are myriad choices. Linleigh
