Not Just a Tank Top...

January 21, 2010 - Linleigh Richker

I took my friend, Lissa out today for a quick post surgery shopping mall run in this torrential Los Angeles rain and I stumbled upon a fantastic find. Check out Express’s sequined tank. It comes in myriad colors: navy, black, graphite, sapphire, hot pink, nude, etc…  For $29.50, this 60% cotton/40% modal tank comes in sizes xxsmall-large.

Being that it is the perfect little underpinning to spruce up your inner glam spring wardrobe, it’s hard to pick just one color!

I'm with you Linleigh on the Express thing. Whenever I take my 13 year old daughter there I always sneak in a little something for myself. The sequin top for 29$ is a perfect example. Can't wait to see it in navy the next time I'm at the mall.

Bashira,
I personally bought the navy and the graphite. I thought they were the richest colors. And the nude one was a fantastic color. They just didn't have my size. Linleigh

Twenty nine dollars for a top like that? How in the world are retailers making money?

Kelly,
The retailers are making their gross margin when it's sold at regular price. It's the manufacturers who have to find creative ways to keep cutting their costs. Most knits priced this low are all done off shore. In this case, China. The US can't compete with that unfortunately and that's another whole subject that could take up volumes of blog space.

My sister needed a top to run from work (lawyer type)to an evening event. Had a pretty navy suit, but needed an evening look. We ran to Express, she tried on the top, incredibly comfortable, beautiful, fit wonderfully, beautifully made, great price! She was complemented on her top specifically by one of the people there.....Thank you Linleigh for sharing your expertise and impeccable taste!

Thank you for this great tank top tip! What a great little find - I have just managed to sort out got 2 Birthday presents in one trip (one electric blue & one in navy). You've saved me a heap of time, not to mention an amount of present-buying anxiety - I may just have to return to procure another one for myself! :o) Really appreciate your column & having access to your hot/hip & wise shopping tips! Thanks again!
