Come Fly With Me: Packing for a Carry on Baggage Weekend Trip
January 26, 2010 - Linleigh Richker
I had a packing conundrum this past weekend as I was preparing to travel to Houston for a four event Bat Mitzvah extravaganza. Do I check my one bag and pay the $18.00 baggage fee and then wait and hope to get my bag at the other end? Or do I figure out a way to carry on my 2 airplane allotted bags? With my handbag counting as one bag, squeezing all my party outfits into a 21” roller board wasn’t going to be a stress free possibility. I had the additional dilemma of timing my arrival with the start of the first party, so the extra 30-40 minutes waiting for my bag was going to be cutting into my precious cocktail hour. The voice of reason was rearing its stubborn head while contemplating the beauty of making this the ultimate packing challenge.
My plan was simple. I was going to trick the airlines. Well sort of… My “two allotted” pieces of luggage were going to be a roller board and a hanging bag. I was going to eliminate my purse! The hanging bag will occupy all my pressed pieces I didn’t want to get wrinkled and the roller board contained all the rest. When I got to the airport, I simply took all the contents out of my handbag, which should be culled down prior, and put them in my roller board. (Note to self: keep your cell phone, reading glasses and kindle in your roller board outside pocket for easy access when getting to your seat.) Then I folded my handbag, which should be a malleable one and put it in the hanging bag. Viola! I now had only two pieces. I felt so accomplished. I was economical with my space and my time. And more importantly I beat the airlines! Move over George Clooney. I can go Up in the Air with the best of you.

A roller board is a term used for a piece of luggage with wheels which is usually 21 or 22" in height so that it can be carried onto the airplanes and fit in the overhead compartments.

Brilliant!!! I will do this next time! I can't stand paying the fee. It'd be one thing if the airlines were improving service and raising fees....but they're not.
