3 Super Healthy (Surprisingly Tasty!) Smoothies
March 26, 2010 - Linda Grasso
I'm not a girl who likes to sip her fruits and veggies. A tall, chilled green drink doesn't exactly tantalize my tastebuds. I'd much rather see what I'm eating and savor the flavor of each particular item. That being said, I've had some remarkably delicious smoothies recently that are extremely healthy and might be changing my mindset - emphasis on might.
This first one is from my sister Lisa, who got the recipe from her dentist. I was blown away by the unique taste of combining kale and spinach with lime and pineapple. Our kids even like it! Now, Lisa doesn't like it too sweet (neither do I)- but if you like a sweeter smoothie just add more agave nectar.
2-3 kiwis peeled
3 T of agave nectar
slice of lime with skin
2-3 leaves a kale- probably could add more
a few leaves spinach- probably could add more
wedge of green cabbage 1-2 inches thick
1 1/2 cups of pinapple
ice
This next smoothie is a favorite of LA-based Integrative Nutritionist Elissa Goodman, who also is a regular SheSez contributor. Elissa has tons of healthy recipes up her sleeve and when I asked her for her favorite smoothie (from a taste standpoint) this is the one she gave me. I love blueberries and I was excited to try this drink. Quite frankly it reminds me of a milkshake - it's that good!
1⁄2 cup frozen blueberries (no need for ice as the berries provide the slushy crunch)1 scoop complete nutritional whey protein fortified powder (not soy protein)
1 1⁄2 cups hemp milk
1-2 tsp of agave nectar
The third and final smoothie is from Registered Dietician Ashley Koff, a contributor for ABC's Good Morning America. She particularly likes this beverage for hydration and energy. Ashley does a lot of research and is very product loyal, so take note of the particular brands of protein powders she recommends.
11 ounces plain coconut water
1 scoop protein powder (Terra's Organic Whey, Rainbow Light Rice Protein or Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro)
1 Tbsp. Barlean's Vegan Omega Swirl

They look very good. I would love to try these and make them for the afternoon. If a medical professional endorses them, then I'm all for it.

I'm not fond of putting leafy veggies in my smoothies. How does it taste?
