March Garden To-Do
March 11, 2010 - John Lyons
We are just about to come upon a month where there is a lot to do in the garden. April is a great planting month - whether you're doing annuals, perennials or edibles.
With March though, here in California, we're in a sort of in between phase right now. However, there are a couple of things you can do in your downtime (if you are in a colder climate, some of these tasks can be done in April or May depending on when your ground thaws out!) :
- It's still ok to keep planting winter veggies, like the kale pictured above that will come into harvest in 40-60 days. Go ahead and keep planting edibles such as lettuces, broccolli and spring onions.
- It's important to continue adding compost to the soil and getting it ready for summer planting that should be done no earlier than early April.
- Now is the time to start tomato and pepper seeds indoors. They will be ready to plant outside in early April.
- Make sure to get on top of weeding now as they emerge after the rains making sure that they do NOT go to seed. Otherwise you will continue to have a problem!
