Galvanic Spa II ageLOC Future Serum
I tried the popular Nu Skin Galvanic Spa last summer and, quite frankly, was surprised at the instant results. The system was effective at essentially lifting the little folds around my nose and smoothing lines around my eyes and forehead. So, when I was invited to try the new version of the hand-held device and to sample their latest product, a serum derived from soy technology, my curiosity was piqued.
Nu Skin's new product is called ageLOC Future Serum, and it has some pretty impressive research behind it. Brigham Young University apparently identified a naturally occurring compound that improves skin health. The little-known molecule, called equol, is derived from plants such as soybeans. Its benefits for skin grew out of earlier work by a BYU professor who was testing various compounds from plants for possible impacts on human health. Equol stood out.
The BYU researchers did experiments to test equol's influence on two components of skin, collagen, which gives skin its structure and elastin, which gives skin the flexibility to resume its shape after stretching or contracting. They specifically wondered what equol would do if they added it to the human cells that make collagen and elastic. Would it stimulate them? The research showed the molecule made when soy is digested stimulates production of collagen and elastin. In addition, the researchers discovered equol also inhibits other enzymes that break down the two components.
The University licensed to Nu Skin the rights to sell equol in a cosmetic skin care product and the result was the ageLOC Future Serum.
I bought the Nu Skin Serum in May. It cost $157 for 1 fluid ounce. With shipping, it came to $178. Ouch! This is way more than I typically spend for skin care products. Suffice to say, my expectations were high.
I used it, as directed, morning and night. And, I cut out all my other skin care products, using just the serum for 45 days. After about a month, I started to notice a difference. The fine lines around my eyes seemed a bit smoother and smaller and, all in all, the texture of my skin seemed to improve. The pores appeared smaller and the color or tone of my skin evened out. In fact, taking a look at my face after 45 days of use, there's not even a hint of blotchiness. Before, on occasion, my skin would get red or ruddy areas on my cheeks and sometimes my chin. The bottle is almost empty, so I'd say, at the most, this single fluid ounce will last 2 months. Bottom line: the serum is pricey, but if you can afford it, I believe it's a great product, and a cut above most others in that price range.
At the home of Nu Skin Representative Tania Cassill, I also got a demonstration of the the Gavanic Spa II, which you can watch above. This new version has a larger, brighter display and it's easier to use than the previous model.
So, how does the "Spa" actually work? Galvanic Spa System II treatments use the basic principles that like charges repel each other and opposites attract, similar to magnetic poles. Products are formulated to contain key ingredients which carry a positive or negative charge. The instrument is also set to have the same charge as the product. The company claims the repelling of like charges “pushes” the product into the skin facilitating the delivery of key ingredients.
As I mentioned, it does work- i.e. most people immediately see positive results, as I did both times I used the Galvanic Spa. But there are a few things to consider before buying one. First, you need to use it at least twice a week. The results you get after going through the approximately 8 minute process only last up to 3 days. And, after buying the $325 device, you still need to spend $60 a month on the gels. If you are up to the task and it's within your budget, this system could be for you. But be sure you are really ready to make the commitment. I have several girlfriends who bought with the best intentions, but never followed through. Their devices have been pushed to the backs of their bathroom cabinets.
Tania Cassill is a Nu Skin Representative based in Orange and Los Angeles counties. If you live in the area, and you'd like a demonstration of the Galvanic Spa in your home, you can contact Tania via her website.
