Wanna Color Your Own Hair - But Afraid You'll Mess Up? Check Out Esalon!

October 27, 2010 - Linda Grasso

Content_btl_v2._ts1277251464 Are you sick of paying $60 to have your roots done?  You must have at least considered it as the colorist chatted away giving a blow-by-blow of her latest boyfriend spat as she painted your scalp.  Or, maybe you're like me and it's the time factor that really sticks in your craw - .i.e. why am I taking up an entire afternoon when I could probably do this faster at home?  However agitating it may be, most of us dismiss these thoughts before the $5 valet charge has left our wallet. The fact is most of us are afraid to charter into this unknown territory: leaving the beauty of our beloved locks to a drug store box of Loreal?  We've still got our hair going for us - right? Why risk screwing it up?

However, now there's a reason to give do-it-yourself hair coloring a try.  Esalon is a company that, for the first time, is bridging the gap between going to a salon and resorting to the cheaper color-in-a-box route.  The new LA-based company makes custom formulated hair color.  Customers go on-line and answer a rather detailed questionnaire, covering everything from how often they color, to whether they have low or high lights, straight or curly hair and to their percentage of gray.  There are also pictures for you to refer to - i.e. are you more this shade of brunette or that shade? A colorist (many of the esalon colorists by the way are from top chi chi salons like Frederic Fekkai) at the lab where the color is mixed then goes over your answers and custom blends your ammonia-free color.

Accessories

Within one business day, the product is shipped to you for $22.  First time customers get a pretty little package thats a soup-to-nuts color care kit - which includes brush, bowl, cape, clips and digital timer.  With each package ordered, you'll also get items like conditioner and stain remover.  Esalon keeps your information on record, so refilling orders is easy.  Color not exactly what you wanted?  They'll make adjustments based on your comments when re-ordering.

I recently tried esalon on my own mop and honestly was thrilled with the results. The color was rich and warm and matched my honey color perfectly (admission: yes, I've cooed "Can you please give me the golden locks of Jenifer Aniston please?") The only issue for me was that it was tough to do the back of my head.  All in all though, I love the product and will use it again. What I do see, I like and the price is right.
